The October rebalance saw another rotation within NG Tactical Growth as both the monthly and quarterly US macro outlook shifted to an environment of decelerating growth and accelerating inflation. The broader global quarterly outlook continues to indicate accelerating growth and inflation.
Despite the change in the US macro backdrop, the model has not moved the portfolio significantly towards defensive assets. Equity exposure has reduced modestly from 100% to 94%, alongside a new 6% allocation to broad commodities.
Within equities, the model has increased exposure to US growth and technology, introducing new allocations to Russell 1000 Growth and semiconductors while maintaining existing positions in the S&P 500, Nasdaq, global information technology and cloud computing. Emerging-market exposure has been reduced from 18% to 12%, while Asia Pacific ex-Japan and defence have been removed. Existing allocations to energy, healthcare and gold mining remain unchanged.
The rebalance demonstrates how the macro environment forms one part of the wider systematic process rather than determining portfolio positioning in isolation. Momentum, mean reversion, volatility, correlations and portfolio optimisation are also incorporated into the model, allowing the portfolio to adjust as the underlying data changes rather than moving between predetermined macro-regime portfolios.
